HYUNDAI IONIQ: A NEW ERA OF EVS?

Ioniq, that’s what the new sub-brand of Hyundai is being called, it’s going to be on all the electric cars that will be launched by Hyundai in the coming future. Now I don’t know why Hyundai decided that they need a separate brand just to make EVs but I trust them because Japanese and Korean car manufacturers are smart, they know how to keep their “WHY” intact and thus they create sub-brands.

So, the first car in this series is going to be called the Ioniq 5, regarding the name, Hyundai has said that they want to keep it pretty simple thus they have gone with a similar naming pattern as Volkswagen did with the ID.

Now the first that came to my mind was that “Isn’t Hyundai a bit too late to enter the EV market?” Like there are other IC manufacturers that have launched EV line-ups. There are EVs in every price range, from the base 15-20 grand to as high as in the millions with cars like the Lotus Evija and Rimac.

I agree with this a bit that they are late, but even Mercedes which is one of the biggest and popular car brands around the world launched their 1st EV just about a year ago, the Mercedes EQC, they were late as well, but guess what? They didn’t fail as most of the market expected them to because their image of being a great car manufacturer is still there, doesn’t matter if they were a 100 percent IC maker and now they are trying to get into EVs.

In fact, Hyundai in India along with many other countries has a huge fanbase with their cars. We have seen their cars selling in 6-digit numbers, so they already have a huge customer base. They just have to convince them as a good electric car manufacturer.

It’s pretty obvious that the Ioniq is going to have fast charging capability, as every car nowadays does. But I think that the rate at which the car will be charged is going to be faster.

Here comes the sad part, the Ioniq will be just another crossover/ pseudo SUV that we see becoming very popular nowadays. I don’t like that kind of design, it looks like a hatchback that has been raised and has been given the sleekness of a sedan and the tire size of an SUV. Defining the design of these types of cars is not possible because they are so confusing.

Coming to the technical details of the Ioniq, it is one of the first EVs with the vehicle to load technology, so what this means is that you can use the energy stored in the battery of the car to either commute or you can use that energy to send power to your home or the power grid, this is the thing that really caught my attention, it would be awesome to see more manufacturers integrating it in their cars.

Regarding the interior, Hyundai says that they are going to model the interior like a living room, so you can imagine all types of comforts in there, it’s going to be spacious and it’s going to be loaded with technology that current EVs probably don’t have.

Since they are working on improving the battery, it’s obvious that along with the charging time, the range of Ioniq will be significantly larger than what it would have if it used the batteries currently being sold in the market.

Finally, Hyundai has revealed no plans yet about launching the Ioniq in India, so we have to be happy with the Kona for a while, but in the upcoming 2 years, Hyundai has got some big plans for India.

So, everyone that will be all for this time, I trust you liked this one, if you did then do share it with your friends and do consider subscribing to Motordrift for more such content in the future.

Till then

Ciao
